Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC), affiliated to the University of Delhi, was established in 1958. This college has been named after Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad, who was the first education minister of independent India. The college is spread over an area of 122 acres. Attached to the college are 4 other institutes - Lok Nayak Hospital (earlier known as Irwin Hospital), GB Pant Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research, Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences and Guru Nanak Eye Centre. MAMC and its associated hospitals have 2800 beds and 47 operation theatres. It caters to more than 250 undergraduate students and 245 postgraduate and postdoctoral students per year, which are trained by 426 faculty members and 810 resident doctors. Maulana Azad Medical College has been ranked 17th among medical colleges in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2020. Maulana Azad Medical College offers various undergraduate, postgraduate and super speciality courses in different streams. The Genetic laboratory and clinic of L.N. Hospital has already been catering to a large number of children, adolescents and adults, including pregnant ladies and providing specialized diagnostics, counselling and management for more than 13 years. The Genetic Clinic at Lok Nayak Hospital has been recognized as one of the eight centers of excellence for rare diseases by the Ministry of Health and family welfare, Government of India and it is also the centre of excellence for Training of In-Service Faculty, by the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India. The Genetic lab at Maulana Azad Medical college & Lok Nayak Hospital, Delhi, which is the largest medical college of GNCT Delhi, provides state of art diagnostic and therapeutic amenities in the field of clinical genetics for the residents of NCT Delhi as well as adjoining areas.
