Among the temples of modern India which Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru dreamt of immediately after independence, was a centre of excellence in the medical sciences. A centre which would set the pace for medical education and research in Southeast Asia. This had the wholehearted support of his Health Minister, Rajkumari Amrit Kaur. The AIIMS was finally created in 1956 as an autonomous institution through an Act of Parliament, to serve as a nucleus for nurturing excellence in all aspects of health care.
AIIMS has constantly been ranked at the top amongst all other medical colleges of the country. The medical science here is highly advanced which is the reason why AIIMS as a hospital witnesses so many patients from different corners of the world. It is globally renowned and recognized for its technology driven approach. This makes AIIMS the dream college for all the medical aspirants of the country.
The Institute has comprehensive facilities for teaching, research and patient-care. As provided in the Act, AIIMS conducts teaching programs in medical and para-medical courses both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and awards its own degrees.
AIIMS being a tertiary care referral center, caters to patients with rare and ultra rare disorders . It was one of the earliest institutes in the country to have medical genetic services under the umbrella of the department of Pediatrics since early 1960s. Facilities for genetic diagnostics, prenatal diagnostics, treatment and research are well developed . The recently inaugurated “Central Core Research Facility (CCRF) “ having state of art set up for research using genomics, proteomics, bioanalytical and bioinformatics technologies, is an important step to augment research capacity of the institute.
AIIMS being designated as one of the eight centers of excellence (COE) for Rare Diseases and the coordinating COE by the Ministry of Health Government of India is an important milestone and shall help in improving the work in the area of rare diseases further.
